Two Decade Long Client Adds In-Law Suite

Feinmann created a beautiful and functional in-law suite for a families’ aging parents in Wellesley, MA. Generally speaking, most aging parents are moving from a larger space to a smaller space, and when downsizing, creating a sense of spaciousness is one of the most important elements besides functionality, accessibility, and comfort, all which were careful considerations as we worked together.

A client since 1993, we gracefully integrated the in-law suite with the rest of the house by adding an additional 750 sq. ft of living space including a master bedroom, closets, bathroom, living area, study, and kitchen. The in-laws can easily access their suite by entering through the shared front door and hallway, through the main home sitting room, prior to entering their dedicated suite. A top priority was aging-in-place functionality and included wheelchair compatible door widths, doors with lever handles, a high seat toilet, and a zero- threshold shower.

A galley kitchen showcases clean lines, ample storage, and a wall of windows allow for natural light, while a new deck expands the living space. The living room is complimented with vaulted ceilings, skylights, and enormous picture window, a key element in allowing the space to feel much larger by bringing the outdoors in and releasing the in-door space out. A few important design elements included built-in book shelving for their rather large collection of historical books and wall space to showcase their art collection.

The real reward working on this project is the peace of mind and flexibility that this in-law suite brought to the homeowners and their parents.

Feinmann does an amazing job! Our project was an almost full gut renovation plus addition and we lived in the house throughout.
