Trends That Shaped Home Design and Décor in 2016

Last January we made some home design predictions based on client requests and overall industry trends. While we were right on most counts, we missed mentioning a few design and décor trends that shaped 2016. Free-standing soaking tubs continued to be a trend throughout 2016. In fact, we predict it will become a staple for the rest of this decade, along with spacious showers. Project Showcase: Splitting the Difference in Newton

Feinmann addition Newton exterior after In October 2015 we showed you a behind-the-drywall sneak peek at this project. Here’s the finished addition with a new kitchen and open concept living/dining room.

The owners of a 1960s split level ranch in Newton wanted to enlarge their kitchen, living and dining area on the main floor with views of the back yard. A 968 square foot two-level addition provides an innovative open floor plan with a new kitchen and combination living-dining room that features a zero clearance, wood-burning fireplace and built-in shelves. On the lower level, what was formerly the husband’s office is now a guest room. A new full bath, laundry room and playroom that exits to the back yard were all part of the project. An existing screened-in porch was incorporated into the new open floor plan on the main floor. A portion of the original living room has been partitioned and is now the home office for the owner’s PR company.

The old deck was removed to make way for the addition. A modest-sized deck with cable railings and a staircase to the backyard is accessible from the upstairs space. Generously sized windows along the rear of the home bathe the space in natural light. New elements of the home are contemporary Shaker-style cabinetry in the kitchen from Greenfield, painted white and a large kitchen island with gray cabinetry below and a honed Bianco marble surface. The space is bathed in natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. Read more about the project here.
