Newton, MA Home Renovation Storyline
The owners of a Newton Tudor home came to Feinmann looking to make the first floor function better for their multi-generational household. Updating their kitchen to provide varied cooking, prep and serving areas was their first priority. They also sought better use of the existing space, improved circulation, additional storage and a contained mudroom. The clients planned to upgrade their eating area and remodel the study, all within the same footprint.
The Feinmann design team solved several design dilemmas. Removing an unused chimney freed up essential floor space to relocate the powder room. Eliminating a column that contained plumbing and obstructed the flow in the kitchen allowed the design to include the extended peninsula with uninterrupted views of the eating area.
The new floor plan offers each member of the family a beautiful and practical place to cook, work, handle household chores and eat. The shape of the kitchen went from an octagon to a rectangular galley, yielding a built-in desk area in the remodeled office behind the kitchen as well as a spot to tuck the powder room. Feinmann created a highly functional kitchen, revamped study, efficient mudroom, plenty of storage and improved circulation.
The cabinetry throughout the kitchen and mudroom is a natural, slab-style wood, with a vertical grain and stainless steel bar pull hardware. The Thermador appliances are stainless as well. The perimeter countertop is black Galaxy granite with a pencil edge that contributes to the kitchen’s overall clean lines and contemporary aesthetic. The multiple heights of the peninsula provide a prep area on the kitchen side and a serving area on the eating area side with a small desk element.
The highlight of the kitchen is the custom-designed appliance garage that runs along one wall and operates with the touch of a button. Made of translucent resin from 3form, the “Ting Ting” sandstone appliance garage door is part of their Varia Ecoresin series. The blender, toaster and standing mixer are within reach yet out-of-sight in the remodeled kitchen, keeping mother (who wants easy access to appliances) and daughter (who wants clean counters) happily co-existing.
