Expansive Porch Extends the Living Space for a Family of Three (Newton, MA)
Nothing says New England like the timeless appeal of a porch to enjoy the Fall, Spring, and Summer seasons. Feinmann, Inc. built a 14×37 porch for a family of three in Newton, MA, extending the footprint of their Colonial home by adding two main living areas; a sitting area and dining area.
Balancing comfort and durability with style, the new deck features Ipe Mahogany wood decking oiled to create a rich warmth and Aztek Premier railings providing the added benefit of low maintenance. The interior roof is complimented with clear fir tongue and groove beadboard.
A key construction element involved removing the two existing decks and steps, a concrete retaining wall, bulkhead doors, and the top two basement stairs. This was then replaced with 50 ft x 3 ft retaining wall with steps of bluestone that lead to the grand porch.
The porch is accessible from the kitchen, study, and living room, as well as from the side entry and backyard, truly making it an extension of living space. Finishing off this porch is a 36-inch Montana gas log set surrounded by Stone Harbor Thinstone veneer on the face and sides of the fireplace and chimney giving it a natural weathered and hand chiseled appearance.
The homeowners said that they use the porch almost every day for dining, family time, as well as for entertaining.
