Newton, MA Kitchen Remodeling Storyline

This active family of five commissioned Feinmann to re-envision their charming Newton Victorian, without expanding the home’s existing footprint. The homeowners wanted an updated kitchen were the whole family could cook together and a new mudroom. The challenge of this renovation centered around finding ways to meet the family’s space and functional requirements only using the square footage they had.

To achieve this addition-by-subtraction, pieces of the puzzle had to be imaginatively re-arranged. A basement stair was relocated under an existing stair and a half-bath was moved to reallocated space for more storage. A rear entry hall with neatly lined cabinet-cubbies for storing coats, boots and sports gear was carved out of the existing kitchen and the old bath.

The bright new kitchen restores Victorian splendor to the space, replacing dated slab-door cabinetry with traditional raised-panel, white painted wood cabinets. Full-height pantry units flanking the entry from the mudroom ensures no storage was sacrificed for the new design. The centerpiece – along cherry wood island with a Carrere marble top – lit by three elegant pendant lights, seats five, allowing the entire family to enjoy the process of cooking (and dining) together.
