Sneak Peek: A Wellesley Home Refreshed with an In-Law Suite Underway

A former client came to us looking to build an in-law suite for his aging parents in his Wellesley home, a split-level built in 1958. More multi-generational families are remodeling their homes to accommodate this national trend

Our client, Andy, recently helped his parents move out of their West Newton home where he grew up. Uncovered among the papers – a plan done by Feinmann in 1992 for built-ins at that Newton home. Feinmann had done a renovation for Andy and his wife, Nan, at their previous home.

To satisfy the requirements of building a space where Andy’s parents can function independently, yet have access to the rest of the family, our design team created an addition at the rear of the house. The new space contains a bedroom suite with bath and closets, an office for Andy’s dad, a living room and kitchenette with space for a table overlooking what will be the new back deck, accessible from the main house with sliders in the dining room. A door from the kitchenette will lead onto the deck as well.

A new entrance with a small pergola and porch were added in the front of the house by the garage as a secondary entrance for the family and a primary entrance for the in-law suite. A new mudroom with storage will be shared by all. Beyond the mudroom there is a transitional room that connects to the main house’s dining room. This sitting area will double as Andy’s mom’s study.

The rest of the story…

As the planning for the new in-law suite began, another priority took center stage: renovating the master bedroom with a new bathroom and closet. The master bath features a tiled, walk-in shower and double vanity with a Cambria Quartz countertop (Parys). Bathroom cabinetry is from Siteline.

The primary areas of the main house also received attention: a new fireplace surround, opening up the wall with inventive, architectural interior windows between the kitchen and the living room, and widening the doorway from the living room to the dining room. The kitchen got a facelift, too. New appliances and new kitchen counters (Cecilia Quartzmaster quartz). New cabinets are from Siteline (although the lower cabinets were re-purposed with new doors only). All of the wood floors were sanded and patched and rooms freshly painted. Finally, the powder room near the new entrance also got a makeover with updated flooring, lighting and fixtures. Watch this space for the final reveal, coming later this fall!
