Most moms dislike being stuck in the kitchen, cutoff from family activities and without being able to keep an eye on the children. This was definitely the case when a Sudbury family with a traditional center-hall Colonial approached Feinmann seeking a way to eliminate the barriers to a more open space concept without adding square footage to the house.
By moving the half bath to another location between the front hall and the new kitchen; removing most of the wall between the dining room and kitchen; and reconfiguring the first floor traffic pattern with an opening into the living room, and opening the half-flight staircase into the family room, this family can now play and stay together.
In addition to updating the kitchen with class white cabinetry and stylish elements, the Feinmann design/build team created built-in cabinetry in the dining room and family room, and upgraded the fireplace mantels with beautiful Dolce Vita Quartzite, matching the kitchen island surface. A bay window was removed by the eating area and replaced with a larger set of double hung windows that overlook the backyard. Opening up the front hall staircase on the dining room side and the half-staircase to the family room provides a visual connection to the kitchen. Mom couldn’t be happier!
A marble mosaic backsplash, honed Absolute Granite perimeter countertops, and Dolce Vita Quartzite on the island are some of the elegant details of the new kitchen. Cabinetry from Showplace with traditional inset doors are painted in Soft Cream, and satin nickel knobs, pulls and handles match the new counter-depth LG refrigerator. A Wolf induction cooktop and Bosch double wall ovens with right swing doors, and a Bosch microwave drawer bring this kitchen into the 21st century. New flooring included Bella Cera Amalfi Coast hardwood in Hickory Capri in the kitchen and dining room and a new tile floor was installed in the mudroom. Another part of the project was relocating the laundry center to the basement.
The classic kitchen now serves as the home’s hub without being isolated from the rest of the space or family members. Mission accomplished!
