The owners of a 1960s split level ranch in Newton are expecting an addition to their family home. They came to Feinmann seeking an enlarged kitchen, family room and dining area on the main floor with views of the back yard. Another goal was to create a playroom and guest room with a new bath on the lower level. A 968 square foot two-level addition will provide an open floor plan at the rear of the home with a new kitchen and living room-dining room combination. It will also have a new wood-burning (zero clearance) fireplace and built-in television and shelving. On the lower level, what was formerly the husband’s office will now be a guest room with a new full bath. Also on the lower level will be a laundry room and a freshly renovated playroom that exits to the backyard.
The old deck was removed to make way for the addition. A modest-sized deck with cable railings and a staircase to the backyard will be constructed as part of the project as well. Oversized windows along the rear of the home bathe the space in natural light. New elements of the home are contemporary with Shaker-style cabinetry in the kitchen from Greenfield, painted white. The kitchen island base will be dark gray. Further design decisions are in process: countertops, backsplash and fireplace cladding. Our design team is working with the clients to finalize their choices.
These photographs show the progression of the project from before and during construction, along with some 3D renderings of the design plans.
