The article focused on opening up your indoor spaces using these tips:
1. Go Big With Your Moves
Think about ways to open up space in your house by taking out walls or rooms. “Remove something or give up something to let in more light and create more connectivity,” says Feinmann, who encourages homeowners to try out big ideas.
2. Deftly Define Spaces
“Keep the spaces [in your home] defined so they don’t bleed into each other,” Feinmann says. Even with an open floor plan, you still want people to feel comfortable and cozy.
3. Spotlight Gathering Places
Add windows and light to create spaces where family and guests will want to gather. Adding a wall of windows and glass doors can completely brighten the room. A two-tiered central island can offer extended seating for welcome guests.

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named Feinmann, Inc. a 2019 Northeast Regional CotY winner in the Residential Exterior $100,000 to $200,000 category of its annual awards competition. Our winning project was the addition of grand 14×37 porch for a family of three in Newton, MA built by Feinmann and designed by Richard Brown Architects. The new porch extends the footprint of their Colonial home and balances comfort, durability, and low maintenance with style while adding two main living areas; a sitting area and dining area. Learn more about our project here.
Each year, NARI presents CotY awards to members who have demonstrated outstanding work through their remodeling projects. Judging is based on problem-solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, and degree of difficulty by an impartial panel of industry experts.
“We are truly honored to receive this award. The family of three told us that they use this space almost every day for three seasons a year. The porch addition extends the footprint of their home truly making it a place for family time and entertainment,” said Peter Feinmann, President of Feinmann.

Our clients were moving from out-of-state to a house in Lexington that had two previous ill-conceived remodeling projects, adding square footage but creating disjointed spaces. The most recent addition was a rustic sunroom abutting the backyard pool area. The rooms were stacked up like boxes, one behind the other.
The goal was to create a floor plan that graciously created a natural flow between the spaces, including an enlarged kitchen, eating area and family room. The husband likes to cook so a good work triangle was a priority. To accomplish the project goals, the Feinmann design team removed the wall between the existing kitchen and family room; and the wall between the family room and sunroom. Read more…
